Deanna Giovingo, Family Consumer Science instructor at Badger High School, is the recipient of $500 as a winner of an essay contest sponsored by The Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin Charitable Foundation. Half of the award is to be used for classroom materials and the other half is for her personal use.
Giovingo wrote a one-page essay that addressed how she incorporates fire safety into her curriculum in the Health, Safety, and Nutrition course as well as into Family Consumer Science education, as a whole.
“The topic of Fire Safety is taught in the Early Childhood Education courses that I Teach,” Giovingo wrote. She said that in the unit of Planning High-Quality Environments the following learning objectives are presented to students:
· Describe emergency procedures for fire, natural disasters, violence, etc.
· Identify first-aid procedures related to early childhood programs.
· Describe the use of various fire extinguishers.
“In my classroom, I think it is essential for students to be aware of the many different resources that are available. Some of the resources are found online using the computer. Other resources are found in print through textbooks,
education manuals, magazines, or newspapers,” she said.
